What is DTF Printing?
DTF stands for Direct to Film printing. DTF uses specially formulated inks printed onto a film that bonds with fabric when heat-pressed, creating a high-quality, vibrant, and durable print to customize your clothing and accessories.
DTF transfers can be used to customize almost any garment or fabric product of any material (cotton, polyester, canvas, and more!).
What is a Gang Sheet?
A gang sheet is a printing industry term for a file layout where multiple images or logos, or repeated versions or sizes of the same image, are arranged together efficiently on a single sheet of transfer film. The Print Lab 617 can print sheets up to 22" wide and from 1' to 20' long to accommodate projects of any size.
Printing using gang sheets allows us to use materials efficiently to provide low-cost, high-quality prints to our customers.
Our build your own gang sheet tool allows customers with no or limited design experience to easily upload image or logo files, decide the size and quantity of each, and automatically produces a print-ready, efficiently-arranged file ready for us to print. If you already have your file prepared, or want to manually arrange your images, please use our upload your own gang sheet product listing.
How do I press my transfer?
When you are ready to press your transfer, you will need:
- Scissors
- An iron or heat press
- Parchment paper
- An ironing board or other heat-resistant surface
Once you have your materials together, the process is quick and easy:
- Cut out your design from your gang sheet. No need for clean edges, only areas with ink will be pressed into the garment and the rest will peel away!
- Place your transfer on the garment - be sure to line it up exactly where you want it before pressing.
- Place a piece of parchment paper over the transfer sheet and press down with medium pressure - set to 310°F for about 15 seconds.
- Wait a few seconds before peeling. If any piece of the design does not adhere properly, place it back down and apply additional pressure and heat, increasing the temperature by 15°F. Repeated pressing will not harm the transfer.
- For maximum durability, we recommend a second press after peeling away the film. Add the parchment paper on top of the transfer and press again for 15 seconds.
How durable are DTF transfers?
DTF prints are incredibly durable when properly applied. To best care for your garment after application, wash at cooler temperatures and avoid aggressive tumble drying or dry cleaning.
